Gluten free beer producers will always have trouble trying to produce a beer that tastes like a beer. However O'Brien Brown Ale does a pretty good job. There is a very strong aroma which is fresh, hoppy and slightly grassy (cut lawn smell). Once poured it is a very dark brown with a slight reddish tint to it and is well carbonated resulting in a nice thick creamy head. The aroma reminded me of Leffe Brune and as soon as I tasted it, I was instantly reminded of Leffe Brune too. This Brown Ale is very similar to Leffe Brune - malty and slightly smokey, but where as the Leffe has a more balanced and refined finish O'Brien Brown Ale is a little bitter and leaves an undesirable bitterness in your mouth. Perhaps it is simply my taste, but the aftertaste spoils the complex and smokey initial flvaour. Overall it is a nice beer, but just not entirely to my taste. If you are looking for a Gluten Free Beer make sure you check it out though as it is a good dark beer substitute for those who are Gluten intolerant. |
