Beer Cartel’s Artarmon floor was one Sydney example of that type — a hidden industrial-unit shop that people used to find after a Saturday errand, then stay in for a conversation about saison. Public accounts put the business online from 2009 and the bricks-and-mortar shop from 2011, in the Reserve Road industrial pocket of Artarmon on Sydney’s lower north shore. Founders’ names in the press are Geoff Huens and Richard Kelsey. Contemporary descriptions — Broadsheet and the shop’s own later note — talk about a very large craft range, international shelves marked by country, Australian independents beside imports, glassware, mixed dozens, and a club. That is a discovery-room brief. It is not a taproom. It is not a large-format supermarket liquor barn.
The useful visit, when a floor like that exists, is forty minutes and one question. Walk styles first: pale lager versus pale ale, then one hop-forward IPA, then one wild card — sour, saison, or a dark ale. Read ABV. Ask the staff where they would start if you usually drink commercial lager. Leave with a mixed six, not a dare.

What changed — confirm it yourself
The operator published a farewell to the Artarmon store: last day at the end of December 2022, then online-only, citing warehouse growth and licence limits at the new site. Later public pages still say they operate online only, with a warehouse address outside Artarmon. We are not a live store-locator. If you care about a physical counter, ask the operator today. Do not treat this essay as an “open now” badge.

Artarmon-type is narrower and geekier. Scharer's Picton is public history of a pub-brewery. You do not go to Picton for a thousand-label aisle. You do not go to a specialist shop for an 1835 sandstone story.

Sydney geography around Artarmon
Artarmon is a lower-north-shore industrial and residential pocket, on the North Shore line, not an inner-west taproom crawl. If your Saturday is Marrickville, this shop was always a separate trip. If your Saturday is a specialist shelf and a train, this was the type. Inner-west precincts remain the walking answer to “where can I find craft beer in Sydney?” on the NSW hub. A discovery room is how you study after you walk.
